5 Reasons You Are Not Meant to Work a Job

Quitting your job to get another job is different than quitting your job to start your own business. There are many reasons and warning signs that you should quit your current job to get another one that’s better suited for you, but here are 5 reasons that you are not meant to work for anyone else besides yourself…

Reason 1: You dread going into work every day

This can be a sign that you just need a different job, but if you’ve felt this way about multiple jobs, it might be time to consider going out on your own. When I worked as a mechanical engineer (before quitting to start my first small business), I completely dreaded going to work every day. I’d get that feeling of anxiety in the pit of my stomach starting sometime on Sunday afternoon that always told me Monday was right around the corner. Every morning when I dragged my tired self out of bed, I would stress about how in the world I was going to get through the next painful 8 hours of my day.

If you dread going to work every day, this is a sign that you need a change. You spend at least one-third of your life at work, so dreading that huge part of your existence is not healthy, but also not necessary when there are other options available.

Reason 2: You are self-motivated when you work on personal projects at home, but not when you work on company assignments

If you notice yourself being  self-motivated when it comes to getting your personal projects done, but not when it comes to work projects, this is a sign that you’d do better working for yourself.

When I was working as an engineer, I’d dilly-dally on work at the office. In fact, I was a terrible employee. I solely relied on pressure from my manager and looming deadlines to get anything done. On the other hand, when I was working on my latest business idea or art project on the weekends, I could stay focused and motivated for hours on end.

Being an entrepreneur or small business owner takes a ton of self-motivation because you don’t have a boss to oversee your work and keep you on track. If you currently don’t feel motivated at work, that doesn’t mean you’re not a self-motivated person, it could just mean that you’re not meant to work for someone else. Pay attention to how you work when you’re tackling a project that you enjoy. If your self-motivation and enthusiasm sky-rockets, this is a tell-tale sign that you’d be better off working for yourself.

Reason 3: You’re constantly day dreaming about working for yourself

If you’re at work and regularly thinking about your next business idea and when you’re going to walk into your boss’s office and finally quit, this is a revealing clue that you are not meant to work for someone else.

There are plenty of people who day dream about nice vacations, improved social lives and having lots of money while sitting in their cubicle, but if you’re day dreaming about working for yourself, you ‘re ready to take it to the next level in a way your fellow co-workers may not be.

In other words, if you can’t seem to let go of a new business idea that you keep trying to put on the back-burner in your mind, it’s time to explore that idea further.

Reason 4: You want to be able to set your own schedule

Some people love having lots of structure in their lives, but if you crave being able to set your own schedule every week, you’d probably do better working for yourself.

True, there are certain jobs out there that allow you to work how you want and when you want, but these are few and far between. When you work for yourself, you get to set any sort of schedule you want. Typically, you will end up working much more than 8 hours a day when you’re a small business owner, but you get to choose when you work and when you don’t work. If you want the freedom and flexibility of setting your own schedule, working for yourself is definitely the way to go.

Reason 5: You have a gut feeling

When you’re not meant to work for someone else, you know it. You may not know it on the surface, but you have a gut feeling deep down that something isn’t right. Sound silly to follow a gut instinct? Well, this is one of the most powerful tools that entrepreneurs use to grow and run successful business, so you better get used to paying attention to it.

If you’ve read this article this far and related to it, I’m guessing that you already know that you want to work for yourself. That’s your gut feeling. Go with it.
